PM snubs Year of the Girl Guide
10 December 2008
Gold Coast Girl Guides will be disappointed after the Government rejected its request to make 2010 the Year of the Girl Guide, said local MP Steven Ciobo.
Mr Ciobo said the former Coalition Government recognised the centenary celebrations of the scouting movement and surf life saving movement by proclaiming 2008 The Year of the Scout and 2007 The Year of the Surf Life Saver.
“It is disappointing Girl Guides Australia have been denied the chance to celebrate its centenary with the same honour as the scouting and surf life saving movements,” Mr Ciobo said.
“I urge Mr Rudd to reconsider his decision and proclaim 2010 The Year of the Girl Guide, to mark the organisation’s centenary anniversary.
“Girl Guides Australia is a fantastic organisation working to enrich the lives of young girls through its programs, which foster friendships, leadership and life skills.
“Mr Rudd should support movements such as Girl Guides, which give young women positive role models to inspire them to contribute to the community.”
Gold Coast Girl Guides organisations are located at Nerang, Beaudesert, Palm Beach/Burleigh, Coomera, Southport, Surfers Paradise, Labrador, Tamborine Mountain, Tugun and Mudgeeraba.
