03 November 2008

The hugely successful Pan Pacific Masters Games is expected to draw a record crowd this year which is good news for local tourism, local MP Steven Ciobo said.

Mr Ciobo said an anticipated 10,000 people will participate in this year’s Pan Pacific Masters Games, which are underway on the Gold Coast.

“The Gold Coast is a burgeoning sports mecca,” he said.

“We’ve created an excellent sports culture here on the Gold Coast, and events like the Pan Pacific Masters Games and Gold Coast Indy put our city on the map.

“They’re fantastic opportunities to showcase our great city to thousands of tourists, which is particularly important in a difficult economic environment.

“These international events are a crucial boost to tourism, which makes up more than 23 per cent of the city’s employment.

“If locals can make the time, I would encourage them to get along to the week-long Pan Pacific Masters Games and join in any festivities.”

This years programme features 34 sports including softball, touch football, soccer, basketball and baseball to individual sports ranging from swimming, athletics to tennis and cycling.

A range of entertainment is lined up for the week, log onto www.mastersgames.com.au
