of the Year 2017

A Gold Coast Rotarian has been recognised for his generous contribution to the local community over the years.

Graham Cifuentes was awarded Gold Coast Volunteer of the Year at local MP Steven Ciobo’s Moncrieff Community Awards in Nerang tonight.

Mr Cifuentes is a member of Ashmore Rotary and helps organise fundraising for local and international charities through their car boot sale. He also works at the Salvation Army’s women and children’s shelter.

He was part of a volunteer group that travelled to East Timor last year to work on a run-down Girls’ Dormitory and he has also worked on the new Mens’ Shed project to be built at Ashmore.

Mr Cifuentes said his award came as a shock.

“I’m shocked, I’m humbled, I had no idea,” he said.

“I just do what needs doing. It’s the early mornings, you know, half past three starts. Every month.”

Mr Ciobo congratulated Mr Cifuentes and said the awards were an opportunity to recognise local community members for their efforts.

“Graham and the other 36 other award recipients are the unsung heroes of the Gold Coast. It’s great to be able to recognise them in a room full of their peers,” he said.

“I am humbled each year by the nominations we receive, there is so much great work being done within the Gold Coast community. The Moncrieff Community Awards are just a small way I can thank the people building our community.”
